Alex joined SA Taxi, in May 2019 as Head of Debt Capital Markets, from Phembani Group where he was an Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer with responsibility for M&A and Infrastructure. Alex joined Phembani in May 2016 after 18 years’ experience in Investment Banking. Alex is a former Head of Principal and Structured Finance at Standard Bank’s Investment Banking Division, which role he held from 2012 to end 2015. Alex’s vast experience of over 13 years in Standard Bank’s Investment Banking Division also includes being Head of Mezzanine Finance, member of the Private Equity and Acquisition Finance teams as well as Head of Top Tier Coverage. Prior to Standard Bank, Alex worked at Citi Bank followed by 4 years at Brait. As part of Alex’s role at Phembani he also held non-executive board positions at AfriSam (Pty) Ltd, where he was a member of the Audit and Risk Committee, and TBWA (Pty) Ltd. Currently Alex holds a Strategy Committee position at SA Taxi.
During his tenure at Standard Bank, he was Chairman of New Business Approval Committee from 2008 to 2011 and was also a member of the Investment Bank’s Credit Committee during that time.
Whilst being a dealmaker at Standard Bank’s Investment Banking Division Alex was involved in structuring and executing a number of substantial BEE transactions including the R3,5bn De Beers BEE transaction in 2005, Mondi Packaging R1,3bn BEE transaction and later lead the local R5bn debt restructuring of De Beers SA as part of a larger $1bn group restructuring with 22 foreign banks, when the diamond market collapsed during 2009. During 2012 Alex structured and negotiated the buy-back of Euro 1bn Eurobonds of AfriSam and introduced Phembani as strategic BEE investor to AfriSam alongside the PIC and restructured the transaction into local senior and mezzanine debt of R5bn.
At SA Taxi, Alex currently manages a debt book of R11,3bn, which consists of 34 funders spread across balance sheet funding of senior and mezzanine debt as well as listed and rated, and non-listed, non-rated securitization structures as part of a R11bn Taxi Finance book. Funders include the local Banks, local Pension Fund Managers and Asset Managers, as well as local DFI’s and International DFI’s including the largest being DFC, AfDB and FMO.
Alex has 22 years of experience in Senior debt, Mezzanine debt, Quasi Equity and Equity Investments.
